The transportation secretary says the funding will strengthen transportation systems’ resistance to flooding and heat waves.
The Department of Transportation recently distributed $830 million to support the climate resiliency of surface transportation systems.
Eighty projects were selected to receive this first round of grant funding based on the ability to address needs within local communities. Projects dedicated to flood resilience, heat exposure, and emergency transportation and evacuation were prioritized. The funding was authorized through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated, “From wildfires shutting down freight rail lines in California to mudslides closing down a highway in Colorado, from a drought causing the halt of barge traffic on the Mississippi River to subways being flooded in New York, extreme weather, made worse by climate change, is damaging America’s transportation infrastructure, cutting people off from getting to where they need to go, and threatening to raise the cost of goods by disrupting supply chains.”
